Volunteer Spots Still Available for PoCo Grand Prix

Port Coquitlam, BC – June 8, 2016… Volunteer positions are still available for people age 16 and up who want to be part of the action at the PoCo Grand Prix July 15.

Presented by Dominion Lending Centres, the PoCo Grand Prix will attract thousands of people to downtown Port Coquitlam for a day of sport, entertainment, family activities and more. The event is part of BC Superweek, Canada’s largest professional road cycling series.

Along with professional races along a 1.3-kilometre circuit, the day will include races for kids and youth, Corporate Challenge races, live entertainment, a Kids’ Zone, beer garden, VIP experience and other activities.

Approximately 150 volunteers are needed to help stage the event. Opportunities are available for people ages 16 and up in areas such as: athlete accommodation, racecourse fencing and signage, marshaling, event set up and take down, spectator engagement, VIP tent and beer garden, fundraising, first aid, the PoCo Grand Prix Expo (trade show), and pace vehicles.

In particular, volunteers are needed for:

• Marshalling – Marshals will coordinate intersections, crosswalks and pedestrian traffic at the event, and must be at least 18 years old.

• Crowd prime fundraising – Fundraisers will collect donations from spectators for the “crowd prime” (a prime is a sprint race for the pros with a cash prize). All donations will be pooled and split equally between the men’s and women’s winners of the crowd prime.

• Hosting an out of town cyclist or team – Host families are needed to provide cyclist(s) a place to sleep or shower and a safe storage place for bike from July 8 to 17.

Volunteers will work either afternoon shifts from 11:30 a.m. to 4 p.m., or evening shifts from 4 to 8:30 p.m.

PoCo Grand Prix volunteers must apply through the City of Port Coquitlam’s volunteer registration process. More information and a registration link can be found at www.pocograndprix.ca/volunteer.
